BE PREPARED 

SNOW CAMPING GEAR LIST

    ___ backpack - internal frame or external, with straps for bag (no bungees)

    ___ sleeping bag (20 to 0 deg F winter bag, 5-7" loft, synthetic, NO down)

    ___ waterproof groundcloth 

    ___ sleeping pad (closed-cell foam, NO air matress)

    ___ second sleeping pad (closed-cell foam or ThermaRest inflatable)


  Ten Essentials:

    ___ compass (map will be provided)

    ___ flashlight (an LED headlamp is best)

    ___ extra batteries

    ___ whistle

    ___ water: carry 1 quart per 100 pounds of body weight

    ___ trail snacks

    ___ waterproof matches

    ___ firestarter

    ___ sunglasses

    ___ pocket knife

    ___ first aid kit


  Other:

    ___ sunscreen, chapstick

    ___ 2 cups and a plate (plastic holds heat better) 

    ___ eating utensils

    ___ toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, washcloth

    ___ small roll of toilet paper in a plastic bag

    ___ 50' of 1/8" nylon rope

    ___ 2 large garbage bags (for trash, wet clothes or emergency poncho)

    ___ foam sitting pad, approx 18" x 18" 

    ___ $20 for meals on the way and back

  Clothing  -- NO COTTON ANYWHERE --

   You need two layers of insulation and one waterproof layer

    legs:

        ___ poly long underpants 

        best outer layers: 

            ___ poly or wool pants 

            ___ breathable+waterproof (e.g., GoreTex) shell pants

        alternative:   

            ___ insulated ski pants w/ nylon shell

    torso:

        ___ poly undershirt + spare shirt

    ___ snow mittens or gloves - 2 pairs minimum, 4 recommended

    ___ pack spare clothing in ziploc baggies or waterproof stuff sacks

    ___ insulating platform for each stove (e.g., 10x10x1/8" plywood)
