Hiking Trip

BE PREPARED 

Individual REQUIRED gear

        ____ day pack (like a school book pack, no frame)

        ____ water - at least 2 quarts per hundred pounds of body weight

                    Bring more if you tend to drink a lot!!

        ____ hiking boots or sturdy shoes 

                    No new shoes or boots!  You have to break them in by

                    wearing them for 3 full days before hiking in them.

        ____ sweater or coat for warmth

                    Best: a light fleece jacket

                    This is for before sunrise and after dark or if it rains.

        ____ shell or coat or poncho for rain

                    Best: a light waterproof+breathable shell

        ____ hat for sun

        ____ sunscreen

        ____ bug repellant

        ____ pocketknife

        ____ flashlight

        ____ spare batteries

        ____ minor first-aid kit (bandaids, cloth tape, antibiotic, wet wipes)

        ____ matches in waterproof container

        ____ compass

        ____ map (will usually be provided)

        ____ water - at least 2 quarts per hundred pounds of body weight

        ____ snack food for hiking (some is usually provided)

        ____ this list, checked off and stored in the backpack


Optional gear

        ____ Camelback - makes it easier to stay hydrated

        ____ sunglasses

        ____ camera

        ____ FRS radio (talkabout)

        ____ polypro shirt - this is the best thing for changeable conditions

        ____ hiking pole(s) (like ski poles)

        ____ gloves for climbing the Half Dome cables
